CONCENTRATES

These are all cannabis concentrates that differ primarily in their texture, consistency and extraction method. Shatter is a brittle, glass-like concentrate with high THC content that literally shatters when broken — it is one of the most stable forms of concentrate for storage. Wax has a soft, opaque, crumbly consistency that is easy to handle on a dab tool and warm with your fingers. Budder or batter is whipped during extraction to create a creamy, smooth texture similar to soft butter — easy to dose and very popular for its flavour. Live resin is made from fresh-frozen cannabis and retains a much richer terpene profile than other concentrates, producing superior and more complex flavour. Sugar is a granular, crystalline concentrate with visible cannabinoid crystals surrounded by terpene-rich sauce. All are consumed the same way — typically through a dab rig or concentrate vaporiser.

The most common method is dabbing — placing a small amount of concentrate on a heated nail or banger attached to a dab rig, then inhaling the resulting vapour through the water pipe. Electric dab rigs such as the Puffco Peak have made this process significantly more accessible by eliminating the need for a butane torch and providing precise temperature control. Concentrate vaporisers designed specifically for wax and oil are another option that is more portable and discreet. Some concentrates can also be added to flower in a joint or bowl — a technique called twaxing — though this significantly increases potency and should be approached with care. Do not attempt to smoke concentrates directly without proper equipment as the temperatures involved are very high.

Significantly more potent. Average cannabis flower ranges from 15% to 30% THC by weight. Concentrates typically range from 60% to 90% THC, with some isolates and diamonds approaching 99% purity. This means a very small amount — often no larger than a grain of rice — can be equivalent to several large hits of high-grade flower. For this reason, concentrates are not recommended for cannabis beginners or those with a low or unknown tolerance. If you are new to concentrates, start with an extremely small amount, wait 15 to 20 minutes to assess the effect, and increase very gradually from there. The onset is faster than edibles but the intensity at higher doses can be overwhelming for the unprepared.

Cured resin concentrates are made from cannabis that has been dried and cured in the traditional way before extraction. This process causes significant terpene loss as volatile aromatic compounds evaporate during drying, resulting in a concentrate with less complex flavour and aroma than the original plant. Live resin is made from cannabis that is flash-frozen immediately after harvest while the plant is still living, locking in the volatile terpene compounds before they have a chance to degrade. The result is a concentrate with a much more vivid, true-to-plant flavour profile. Live resin commands a higher price due to the more demanding extraction process and the requirement for maintained cold-chain storage, but for terpene-forward consumers the difference in flavour experience is substantial and immediately noticeable.

Store concentrates in small, non-stick silicone or glass containers in a cool, dark place. Heat is the primary enemy of concentrate quality — warmth causes terpene evaporation, potency degradation and unwanted changes in texture over time. For short-term use over a few days, a cool dark drawer or cupboard works well. For storage of more than a few weeks, refrigeration in an airtight container is recommended. Do not freeze concentrates unless they are hermetically sealed and very dry, as temperature fluctuations and moisture condensation from a standard freezer can negatively affect both texture and potency. Keep all containers tightly sealed when not in use to prevent terpene loss through evaporation. Most concentrates will maintain quality for three to six months with proper storage conditions.
