HASH

Hash is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of cannabis concentrate, with a history spanning thousands of years across Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. It is made by separating the resin glands (trichomes) from the plant material and compressing them into a solid block or ball. The result is a potent, aromatic product that typically contains 30% to 60% THC — higher than flower but generally lower than modern solvent-based extracts like wax or shatter. Unlike many modern concentrates that use chemical solvents in their extraction, traditional hash is made using mechanical or water-based methods with no chemicals involved, making it a popular choice for those who prefer a more natural, traditional product.

Traditional hash such as Moroccan or Lebanese is made by dry-sifting dried cannabis over fine mesh screens to collect loose trichomes, which are then pressed into blocks by hand or with applied heat and pressure. Bubble hash, also called ice water hash, is made by agitating cannabis in ice-cold water which causes the trichomes to separate and sink. The mixture is filtered through a series of micron bags to separate trichomes by size and purity grade. The collected material is then dried and pressed. Live rosin takes this further — starting with fresh-frozen cannabis, processing through ice water extraction, then pressing the resulting bubble hash using heat and pressure to produce a solventless, highly terpene-rich extract. Live rosin is the most premium and expensive option available.

Hash can be consumed in several ways depending on your preference and the quality of the product. The most traditional method is to crumble or slice small pieces and blend them into tobacco or cannabis in a joint or pipe — this is how it has been consumed for centuries across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. For a cleaner experience without tobacco, mix crumbled hash with dried herb in a pipe or bong. High-quality bubble hash and live rosin can be dabbed on a heated nail or e-rig at appropriate temperatures. Hash can also be added to a joint wrapped around the outside — sometimes called twaxing — which significantly increases potency and slows the burn for an extended session. The method you choose affects both flavour intensity and the overall experience.

Bubble hash is commonly rated on a 1 to 6 star scale based on how cleanly it melts when heated, which reflects its trichome purity and the quality of the extraction process. One to two star hash contains a higher proportion of plant material mixed with the trichomes and does not melt cleanly when heated — it is best added to joints or bowls rather than dabbed directly. Three to four star hash is considered half-melt, meaning it melts partially when heated but leaves some residue behind. Five to six star hash is full-melt, meaning it liquefies completely and cleanly like a pure oil when heated — this is the highest quality grade and is fully suitable for dabbing on a nail or e-rig. The star rating reflects trichome purity and extraction care, not potency alone.

Hash is generally more stable than fresh flower or highly terpene-rich extracts but still benefits significantly from proper storage. Keep it in an airtight container — glass is ideal, though food-grade silicone also works — away from heat, light and humidity. A cool, dark drawer or cupboard is sufficient for short-term storage of a few weeks. For longer storage, wrap the hash tightly in parchment paper, seal it in an airtight bag and refrigerate. Avoid freezing unless the hash is very thoroughly dried and hermetically sealed, as moisture damage from condensation can introduce mould. When removing from cold storage, always allow the hash to come fully to room temperature before opening the container to prevent condensation forming directly on the product. Properly stored hash can maintain quality for six months to well over a year.
